Unemployed - A Memoir

My Photo
Name:
Location: Cedar Park, Texas, United States

I am an outsourced American: I am black/African American and approaching 43 years of age. This is a chronicle of my story. The major networks talk about the "robust economy," few of them talk about the personal cost of the loss. I hope my story is not just an ethnic story. Like I said: I am an outsourced American, a casualty of NAFTA and CAFTA. We will all share in this boat soon.

Dell Cuts Jobs

Dell Inc. acknowledged Thursday that it has cut jobs this week “at a number of Dell locations, including Central Texas”.

A brief commentary on education and outsourcing:

I am worried about what our school systems produce as far as high school graduates.

I find myself teaching Algebra 1 and Pre Calculus and frankly find the kids unmotivated to study and master the material.

There are a few bright spots, especially those that KNOW they want to major in the sciences or law enforcement.

The others are a product of a self-indulgent society that has made music down loadable, video games more addictive than reality and actually READING your text book and TRYING the examples therein.

India, China and other Asian countries consistently outpace us in time spent per day in school, time spent per week in school (Japan goes 6 days versus our 5), and time spent by students studying to master the material.

Our minimum wage: $7.25; China's: $0.25!

This is not in defense of outsourcing. But if we're going to change the tide, it's time we enlisted our youth in the fight before they determine their own uncertain futures...by apathy.
